A historical guide to our town

Bankers corner at the turn of the 19th/20th century

The name Eastbourne is derived from East Burne, the Burne being a stream which springs to the surface and feeds the pond in Motcombe Gardens. In 1850, the seventh Duke of Devonshire created a town 'built by gentlemen, for gentlemen'. Visit our picture gallery in Historic Eastbourne to see how the town has evolved from rolling countryside to the popular seaside resort of today.

In this section you will also discover events that have placed Eastbourne firmly on the map, along with interesting speakers who have visited the town and under 'Action for Change', we have video clips of some of the campaigns that have occured in the town!

Visit also 'In Memory', where you will find an opportunity to listen to some of the great people that have lived and worked in Eastbourne.
